Frequently Asked Questions

How do I clean my pack?

Use a mild soap and a damp sponge to wipe out the inside and outside of the pack bag.

Stubborn spots may require scrubbing with a soft bristle nylon brush.

Air dry the pack until it’s completely dry (both outside and inside) before storing.

Then make sure to keep it in a cool, dry place when not in use.

Are the backpacks waterproof?

We have selected materials that provide the best balance of abrasion resistance and weatherprotection. The 1000 denier Cordura® fabric that we use on the outer shell of the bag has a waterproof coating on the under-layer. The lining of most of our bags is a 420 denier nylon that also has a waterproof coating on the under-layer. In addition, many of our bags use twolayers of 1000d Cordura® on the base of the pack for additional protection.

There are two points that stop the pack from wearing a “waterproof” moniker: stitch holes and zippers. The only true waterproof bags are those that use a welded construction. The needles on a sewing machine – no matter how tiny they are, still leave little holes in the fabric and therefore are a possible entry point for water. Zippers also can be a source of water entry into a bag. While there are “waterproof” zippers on the market, the durability of the coatings on those zippers don’t meet our standards andwe choose to use nylon coil zippers with nickel plated sliders from YKK.

Do you still make child carriers?

This is a popular question.  The short is answer is “no – Madden Equipment no longer produces child carriers.”  We stopped producing the category-redefining Caravan and Voyager child carriers around 2003.  Since the child carriers were built to Madden Equipment’s legendary quality standards, the products have had an extended lifecycle on the secondary market.  Please note that Madden Equipment no longer warranties, services or supports the child carriers.

Do you still make bike panniers?

Currently, Madden Equipment is not producing bicycle touring bags.

Do you still make gear for outdoor education programs?

While experiential education is the foundation of Madden Equipment, we no longer produce the packs for outdoor-ed programs.

Are all of the packs made in the USA?

Yes. In fact, we still use a lot of the original Madden Equipment patterns for the “Classic” collection of packs.
